Choosing the right sofa is one of the most important decisions when furnishing a living space. Among today’s most popular options are modular sofas and sectional sofas. While they may appear similar at first glance, they serve different lifestyles, layouts, and design priorities. Understanding the key differences will help you select a sofa that truly fits your home.

At Mobilart Meubles & Décor, 8260 Devonshire Road in Mont-Royal.
Vanguard Furniture was founded in 1969 and has grown from a small operation with two craftspeople into a family-owned company with more than 750 artisans working across six workshops in North Carolina and Virginia. The company describes its purpose as creating heirloom-quality furniture that brings together traditional craftsmanship and modern design.
That combination is central to the brand. Vanguard furniture does not belong to a single aesthetic category. Its collections move comfortably between contemporary, transitional and classic interiors, with pieces ranging from quiet, architectural silhouettes to more expressive statement designs.
The result is furniture that can feel current without depending on a short-lived trend. This versatility is particularly useful in Montreal, where century-old residences, mid-century houses and modern condominiums often require very different approaches to scale and style.
The quality of upholstered furniture is determined by what happens beneath the fabric as much as by what is visible on the surface. Vanguard follows a bench-made tradition, meaning that skilled craftspeople remain involved throughout construction, upholstery and finishing.
Depending on the individual design, important qualities may include:
Eight-way hand-tied suspension is especially valued in premium seating. The springs are tied in multiple directions to help distribute weight, maintain support and contribute to a balanced sitting experience. It is a time-intensive construction method associated with traditional high-quality upholstery.
Craftsmanship can also be seen in the precision of a seam, the alignment of a pattern, the shaping of an exposed wood frame and the consistency of a hand-applied finish. These details are easier to understand in person, which is one reason visiting a showroom remains valuable when choosing a significant piece of furniture.
Vanguard distinguishes itself through customization. The company states that custom orders are a specialty rather than an exception, allowing clients to personalize furniture according to their room, lifestyle and design direction.
Available choices depend on the model and custom program, but can include:
Custom Features - What it allows you to change:
Fabric or leather - Select the colour, texture, performance level and overall character of the piece.
Silhouette and configuration - Choose among sofas, loveseats, chairs, sectional components, chaises and ottomans where offered.
Dimensions - Certain programs offer different widths, custom table sizes or alternative configurations.
Arm style - Options may include track, English, rolled or other tailored arm profiles.
Seat depth - Select a standard or deeper sitting experience on applicable models.
Cushions and backs - Choose from available seat-cushion, bench-seat and back-pillow constructions.
Seams and welts - Refine the tailoring through welted, knife-edge or English-seam details.
Base and legs - Select compatible foot shapes, exposed bases or tailored skirts.
Wood finish - A vast selection of premium and hand-rubbed finishes.
Decorative details - Add compatible nail trim, distressing, highlight striping or alternate sheen levels.
This level of choice makes it possible to begin with a proven furniture design and adapt it to a specific interior. A sofa can be made visually lighter for a Montreal condo, given a deeper seat for a family room or upholstered in a performance textile for a busy household. An accent chair can introduce colour and texture without requiring the room to be redesigned around it.
Customization is not simply decorative. The most successful specification considers comfort, circulation, natural light, existing finishes and how the furniture will be used every day.
The upholstery material has a major effect on appearance, comfort and maintenance. Before choosing a colour, consider how the room functions.
For a frequently used family room, a tightly woven performance fabric may provide the most practical balance of softness and resilience. Velvet or textured chenille can bring depth and richness to a more formal space. Leather offers a distinctive tactile character and can develop an attractive patina over time when properly maintained.
Important questions include:
Viewing a sample under the room’s actual lighting is important. A neutral that appears cool in a showroom can look warmer at home, while velvet and other directional fabrics may change noticeably as light moves across their surface. Mobilart’s design team can help clients compare materials and coordinate them with rugs, wall colours, wood tones and existing furnishings.
Montreal interiors reward furniture with adaptable proportions. A large open-plan residence may need a substantial sectional to define the living area, while a condominium requires careful attention to depth, traffic flow, elevator dimensions and delivery access.
Vanguard’s range supports both situations. Its assortment includes living-room upholstery, dining furniture, bedroom pieces, home-office furniture and occasional designs. Custom options can help clients achieve a more appropriate relationship between the furniture and the architecture instead of forcing a fixed showroom piece into the wrong setting.
For traditional homes in Westmount or Outremont, a transitional silhouette can complement architectural mouldings without making the room feel overly formal. In a Griffintown or downtown condo, a cleaner profile, elevated base and restrained fabric can maintain open sightlines. Larger homes in the West Island may benefit from generous sectionals, deeper seating and durable upholstery selected for everyday family use.
The objective is not to match furniture to a postal code. It is to understand the proportions, architecture and lifestyle that shape each Montreal home.
Mobilart’s relationship with Vanguard also extends to several Mobilart Signature Collections crafted in Vanguard’s American workshops. These collections unite Mobilart’s design vision with Vanguard’s manufacturing capabilities.
Sophia expresses refined contemporary style through balanced proportions and elegant detailing.
Audrey introduces sculptural forms and Art Deco-inspired glamour.
Emerson takes a softer organic-modern direction, emphasizing relaxed forms and natural visual rhythm.
Together, these collections demonstrate the breadth of Vanguard’s manufacturing expertise across dining rooms, bedrooms, storage and occasional furniture. They also give Mobilart clients access to coordinated pieces with a distinct design identity.
Online images are useful for discovering a style, but they cannot fully communicate seat depth, cushion response, fabric texture, finish variation or physical scale. These factors become especially important when ordering custom upholstery.
At Mobilart’s 25,000-square-foot Montreal showroom, clients can experience selected Vanguard pieces and review available materials with a design consultant. A consultation can help determine:
The correct sofa or sectional dimensions
Whether standard or deeper seating is preferable
The most suitable upholstery for the household
How an exposed wood finish coordinates with other furniture
Whether a contrasting welt, nail trim or decorative detail improves the design
How the finished piece will relate to the rug, lighting and architecture
Mobilart also offers complimentary design consultations and white-glove delivery, helping clients move from initial selection through final placement with professional guidance.
Vanguard occupies the premium and luxury furniture category. Its value comes from the combination of construction, customization, material selection and skilled labour—not simply from a brand name.
It is particularly well suited to buyers who:
Want furniture tailored to a specific room
Care about frame, suspension and upholstery construction
Prefer to choose their own fabric, leather or finish
Need a configuration that standard retail furniture cannot provide
Are furnishing for long-term use rather than a temporary trend
Want professional assistance coordinating an entire room
For these buyers, customization can prevent compromises that become expensive later: a sofa that is slightly too deep, a sectional that interrupts circulation or an upholstery colour that does not work with the room’s natural light.
